Il s'agit d'une des premières reprises dans la presse américaine du canular du diaphote du Dr. Licks, lancé le 10 février 1880 par le Professeur Merriman dans le Daily Times de Bethlehem. Le paragraphe d'introduction est nettement plus court.
L'American Manufacturer and Iron World, publié à Pittsburgh et Philadelphie, avait publié une semaine plus tôt, le 20 février 1880, un article sur le telephote des frères Connolly et McTighe.
